Nathan Whittaker Program Notes None other than Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart dubbed the pipe organ as “The King of Instruments”, so who are we to argue! Organist extraordinaire Wyatt Smith gives us a private look at the inner workings of the seventeen rank, two manual tracker organ at Epiphany Episcopal Parish in Seattle by acclaimed builder Martin Pasi. Dr. Smith curates our organ exploration with a menagerie of North German organ music by Buxtehude, Scheidt, Tunder, and J.S. Bach. This deep dive into variation sets by Mozart and Beethoven shows that a great idea is inexhaustible in its ability to generate fresh and surprising new forms. The program will include Beethoven’s “Eroica” variations and fugue, op. 35, written at the peak of his struggle with encroaching deafness and prefiguring the final movement of the Third Symphony.
